Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Documentary photography has long been recognized as a powerful tool in conflict resolution, providing visual narratives that document the realities of conflict and inspire dialogue, empathy, and action. In Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, a region often affected by communal clashes and disputes, documentary photography serves as a medium for storytelling and advocacy. By capturing the human cost of conflict, the resilience of affected communities, and efforts toward reconciliation, documentary photographers contribute to raising awareness and fostering understanding among stakeholders. According to Musa and Bello (2023), images that depict the aftermath of conflict can evoke emotional responses that drive peacebuilding initiatives. However, the potential of documentary photography in conflict resolution in Jalingo remains underutilized due to challenges such as limited access to conflict zones, media bias, and inadequate platforms for disseminating impactful images. This study explores the role of documentary photography in conflict resolution, focusing on its contributions, challenges, and potential for fostering peace in Jalingo.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant potential of documentary photography to aid in conflict resolution, its impact in Jalingo is limited by challenges such as restricted access to conflict zones, the proliferation of unverified visual content, and inadequate training for photographers in conflict-sensitive reporting. These barriers hinder the ability of documentary photography to effectively contribute to peacebuilding efforts. While studies have explored the role of media in conflict resolution, limited research focuses specifically on documentary photography in Jalingo (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2024). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the role of documentary photography in conflict resolution.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

3. To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of documentary photography in fostering peace.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of documentary photography in conflict resolution in Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State. It excludes other forms of media and focuses specifically on documentary photography. Limitations may include variations in access to conflict zones and the availability of photographic content.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
1. Documentary Photography: The practice of capturing images that document real-life events, often with the aim of raising awareness or advocating for change.
2. Conflict Resolution: The process of addressing and resolving disputes through dialogue, understanding, and negotiation.
